HEALTHY IS MANLY: June Is Men’s Health Month
On average, men die five years younger than women, and at higher rates from 9 of the top 10 causes of death. We all have men we care about in our lives. And, we all have the power to help the men we care about take care of themselves and live longer, healthier lives. Here’s how.
- Encourage them to get their preventive care. Preventive care is the best way to manage health issues and catch potentially dangerous conditions early, when they’re most treatable. And remember, there’s no cost for recommended preventive services provided by an in-network provider.
- Help them to be active. Many of us find it difficult to get motivated for physical activity on our own. So, get active together! Take up golfing, tennis or hiking together. Meet in a park and go for a walk. Start a workout program on DVD. Play catch. Help with yardwork. Build something together. You get the idea.
- Let them know you care. Tell them how much they and their good health matters to you.

GET COACHED: Those Healthy Goals Are Within Your Reach
Whether your goal is to lose weight, increase your energy, sleep better, exercise more, eat healthy, stop smoking, control your drinking, or just feel better, a Wellness Coach (or Health Coach) can help you establish lifelong healthy habits.
You’re in charge every step of the way, but your coach will guide and support you through a process like this:
- Step 1: Clarify your motivation for change
- Step 2: Give you information to help you start new habits
- Step 3: Set challenging, but realistic goals
- Step 4: Hold you accountable
- Step 5: Encourage you as you reach goals
You and your Wellness Coach will decide how often you need to meet, which may include emails, text messages, phone calls, virtual (online) visits or in-person sessions. How long you continue to work with a Wellness Coach depends on your personal goals, but if you’re determined, you can make surprising progress in just a few months!
