NEW MAMMOGRAM GUIDELINES: Start Screening at Age 40

One in eight women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime.

Breast cancer is still one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in U.S. women, second only to lung cancer. However, when breast cancer is detected in its earliest, localized stages, the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%.

Although the risk for developing breast cancer increases as women age, the incidence rate in women under age 50 has been increasing at a faster pace than the overall rate. Consider these stats:

  • About 9% of all new breast cancer cases in the U.S. are diagnosed in women younger than 45 years old.
  • 1 in 8 breast cancers are diagnosed in women younger than 45; 2 in 3 breast cancers are found in women 55 or older.
  • Half of women who develop breast cancer are younger than age 62.

In 2024, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) revised the breast cancer screening guidelines. They now recommend that women at average risk should get a screening mammogram every other year, beginning at age 40 and continuing through age 74.

Women with a high risk of breast cancer, such as those with a strong family history, certain genetic markers, or a history of breast cancer, should talk with their doctor about earlier or more frequent screening.
